How to treat and get rid of eczema? Or are there any alternative solutions to atleast lessen the scrathing?

My boyfriend has eczema and he can't stop scratching every single time. I can see him getting depressed about it. he said he is allergic to cats, does it affect also? he tried different cream every single time - sometimes it will work but will eventually come back. Do you know any alternative thing to do? For him to stop scratching? the bleeding? the wounds? I know there is no cure known yet.. but atleast remedy will do thank you.

Rule out the cats. Severe eczema should be treated by a physician or dermatologist. Eczema is most common where the weather is very dry and less humid. If the condition has gotten to the point of bleeding and wounds, antibiotics and/or antifungal drugs are definitely in order. Also, promethazine (prescription only) anddiphenhydramine (Benadryl) can help relieve some of the itching. Corticosteroids creams help relieve symptoms eczema;some being for severe cases.. Hydrocortisone cream is OTC with aloe vera can be effective.

Moisture is key when dealing with eczema. Thick creams such as Aquaphor or Eucherin keep moisture in. Alba makes a petroleum-like product can Un-pertroleum, Multi-purpose Jelly. It has many uses and you can get it without a prescription. Keep the body hydrated with 8-10 cups of water a day. First, see a doctor for the wounds and heal those. Then you can treat with alternatives.

Reminder: Although I am a licensed esthetician, I cannot diagnose or prescribe medication. Any advice given is strictly based on knowledge obtained by working in the field. Always consult a doctor before taking or using an OTC drug. Do NOT mix diphenhydramine ointment (anti-itch) with Benadryl.

  • The main cause of eczema is overreaction of the immune system. Identifying certain foods, chemicals, etc can be very helpful in battling this disease. I try to avoid soy and milk products which trigger my flare-ups.
After using number of prescription drugs I've turned to the natural treatments.
Now I use herbal remedies from serenaskin.com, which aim at the root of the disease - the immune system, and are steroid-free.
After about 2 weeks of using ointment and spray my skin has been cleared up and now I just continue with anti-eczema extract, which controls the immune system. My skin has been clear for months now.
It is the only treatment I have found that provides me complete relief when I use it as directed.

  • I have occasional bouts of eczema and my solution is Aveeno Advanced Care Body Wash and Lotion (with the light blue caps).
They have oat essence and ceramides that help moisturize extra dry skin. It's Dermatologist developed, clinically tested, fragrance-free and can be used daily, even on babies.
It's available at most drug stores, Wal-mart and Target, both priced anywhere from $8-10 each.
When I used the lotion, I saw improvement after the first night I used it. The body wash smells kinda funny (like fish or something), but it really helps keep the eczema from coming back.
    Good luck!
